Reports to:                            Director of Special Services and Building Principal

Job Goal:                              To help reduce or eliminate speech and language impediments that interferes with the individual student’s ability to derive full benefit from the district’s educational program.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Provides therapy for all students ruled eligible for speech/language services by the appropriate screening team.
  • Screens all kindergarten and first grade students to determine whether or not their present speech/language skills are within normal limits, given the normative date of children within their same chronological age group.
  • Screens the hearing of all kindergarten students to determine if bilateral hearing is within normal limits according to MS Department of Education guidelines.
  • Screens the hearing of all first and fourth grade students to determine if hearing is within normal limits.
  • Screens hearing and speech/language for any child in the District determined to be in need of comprehensive educational assessment.
  • Screens hearing and speech/language of any child in the District at the request of parents and/or the classroom teacher.
  • Provides a comprehensive speech/language assessment of all students who have failed the speech/language screening according to MS Department of Education guidelines.
  • Writes comprehensive speech/language assessment reports and statements as to whether or not a student is eligible for speech/language services.
  • Writes Individual Educational Plans (IEP) in conjunction with the child’s classroom teachers and any other district personnel providing services to a student ruled eligible for speech/language services.
  • Holds IEP meetings with parents and other necessary school personnel for each child enrolled in speech/language therapy, in order to develop a specific educational plan to meet the needs of the student.
  • Holds parent and teacher conferences to explain the services provided by the Speech/Language Clinician, their child’s specific speech/language disorder, the educational plan for intervention, their child’s current status in therapy, classroom stimulation techniques, class/home carry-over techniques, their rights as parents of a disabled child, and any questions that the parent and/or classroom teachers might ask.
  • Distributes documents and verifies receipt of all necessary forms and letters in the Referral-to-Placement Process for the child receiving Special Education Services according to the MS Department of Education guidelines.
  • Serves on various committees pertinent to the Special Education Department for assigned school and/or district.

 

 

  • Performs any other tasks as required by the Superintendent of Education, the Assistant Superintendent, the designee of the Superintendent, and the Director of Special Services

 

Terms of Employment:         salary based upon certification and experience. 187 day work schedule.

 

Evaluation:                            Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
